Reflective Writing 5_ Understanding Definition and Characteristics of Academic Writing
I personally believe that
this academic writing course is a significant benefit to my writing. As far as
I learn in this course, I get a lot of new sciences and I feel comfortable
atmosphere during the lesson. The lecturer also gives a clear explanation so
that I can understand what the material is about, and at the last meeting, we
discussed about what academic writing is? And what the characteristics are?
Then my point of view about the topic material is academic writing has an
important role in academic life. It is usually used either by students or
educators for their writing. And as the material that has been explained by him
before, academic writing is a formal style of writing used in university and
scholarly publications (refer to journal articles or academic books). Then I am
able to understand that academic writing is an analytical writing which focuses
to develop my argument that is supported by using an evidence. So that I can
persuade the readers to believe in my topic.
But, at the last meeting,
the lecturer tells me more information about academic writing. I can conclude
that academic writing involves strong composition, excellent grammar, and a
consistent stylistic approach. The strong composition here is completing with
good structure, it starts from the beginning that consists of a quotation, a
question, an opinion, an interesting fact, an irony, an analogy, and an anecdote.
The second is the body, the paragraphs should flow naturally into one another,
and also the connection should be made. The third is a conclusion, wherein this
step we can not introduce anything new, but we have to draw in the
introduction. Then we have to demonstrate a conclusion, give the essay a sense
of completeness, and leave a final impression for sure. The fourth is a revision,
in this step, we have to links and gaps, be ruthless, need to read text out
load, do content revision, grammatical, presentation revision, and spelling it,
and the last step is edit. In addition, formal academic writing style avoid
slang, jargon, and abbreviations. Academic writing is used for school, college,
application essays, research and scientific papers, conference presentations,
and also business proposals.
In conclusion, as a
college student, I can understand about the academic writing and the characteristics.
Then I can do my reflective writing and another assignment like essays, group presentations,
and making a paper or college handouts using an academic style bit by bit. So
that it can improve my writing skill and also enhance my academic word uses in
college.
