Writing is an activity in conveying ideas or expressions in the form of writing that can not be avoided from human life. Both in academic, political, social, and so on. In this fourth semester of the English Education Department of Sultan Ageng Tirtayasa University. The courses are directed to be more specific and to be more difficult to learn by the students, there are eleven courses to be studied by the students in the fourth semester. One of the department courses offered to the student is academic writing.

This academic writing course is taught by Mr. Udi Samanhudi Ph. D., which had been ever taught to me before in the third semester with a different course that is academic speaking. The first meeting of academic writing that is taught by him, certainly become an interesting thing to learn. Here, he explains to us about the RPS and what are the targets in learning academic writing. He is also telling us a bit about what academic writing is.

Now, I am able to understand what academic writing is. It starts from the definition, characteristics, the common problems most students encounter in dealing with academic writing, and understanding about ‘digital’ writing.  Well, academic writing is the writing done for academic purposes (Fang, 2021). Means that, academic writing is a formal style of writing used in university and scholarly publication (refer to journal articles or academic books). The characteristics of academic writing are clear, brief, targeted, well-structured, and evidence-based. The common problems most students encounter in dealing with academic writing were text structure, grammar and punctuation, lexical difficulties, and plagiarism. Then, the practice of writing in a digital space is known as digital writing. This can encompass social media, as well as online journals and scholarly articles (Croissant, 2017).

Academic writing and reading are related too. Students study text structures and vocabulary from a range of genres, which they can then apply to their own work. Similarly, writing exercises aid the development of having read skills of students. So that students who read a lot would be better writers. Well, that’s why writing in an academic style is very essential for students’ academic success and is required for discipline learning.  It is due to students would be able to analyze, communicate understanding, think critically, and focus on technique and style if they write academically.
